Dr. Suman Rao is a Professor of Neonatology at St. John’s Medical College, Bengaluru, and a consultant in the World Health Organization’s Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing. For more than two decades, her work has focused on improving outcomes for small and sick newborns.
She has led and contributed to pioneering research on Kangaroo Mother Care and developmentally supportive newborn care, including WHO-supported immediate KMC, ACTION and scale-up implementation research. She is also a national neonatal-resuscitation trainer and has led initiatives mentoring Special Newborn Care Units.
Her innovation work includes low-cost remote newborn monitoring, therapeutic hypothermia and CPAP devices. Alongside clinical and implementation research, she teaches medical and nursing students and mentors emerging researchers. St. John’s identifies the newborn-health programme she co-leads as an ICMR Collaborating Centre of Excellence.
